Thin Strips

by Carl Sandburg, 1920

In a jeweler’s shop I saw a man beating
out thin sheets of gold. I heard a woman
 laugh many years ago.

Under a peach tree I saw petals scattered
 .. torn strips of a bride’s dress. I heard
a woman laugh many years ago.
